So, in hand with discussion of importing feed analyses, analyses performed and frequency should be addressed. What analysis should we be taking on our feeds? Well, that depends on what the feed is.
Forages
For all Forages the following analysis should be performed:
- DM
- NDF
- Lignin
- dNDF (preferably 24hr)
- Ash
- CP
Silages
- Ammonia
- Soluble Protein
- Fermentation Acids
High Starch Forages
- Starch
- 7 hr digestibility
Hays
- Sugar
Protein fractions are good to have but do not have a very high sensitivity in the Model
- ADIP
- NDIP
Non-Forages
Fibrous Products
- DM
- NDF
- Lignin?
- dNDF?
- Ash
- Fat
- CP
- Sugar
Feeds >20%Protein
- DM
- CP
- NDIP
- ADIP
- Soluble Protein
Starch>15%
- Starch
- 7 hr starch digestibility
Frequency of analysis and number of samples is another issue. Work by Weiss and St-Pierre form The Ohio State has devoted considerable attention to sample frequency, number, and variability dependent on feed, heard size, and storage method. We will look at some of that information tomorrow.
